What are Biofuels?


Biofuels are defined as solid, liquid, or gas fuels that are derived from recently dead materials. They can be produced from any biological carbon source, but they are usually made from photosynthetic plants such as algae. This type of clean technology is typically used to power cars, heating homes, and as a power source for other home appliances such as the stove.


Agrofuels are biofuels which are created from specific crops, instead of waste processes such as landfill off-gassing or recycled vegetable oil. This type of fuel is developed in two ways. One method is to grow crops that have a high sugar content such as sugar cane or sugar beet, and then utilize yeast fermentation to produce ethyl alcohol, which is commonly referred to as ethanol.

Ethanol is frequently used as an energy-efficient motor fuel additive. One of the benefits to using ethanol in cars is that it is an eco-friendly alternative to oil, which can help improve the environmental effects of carbon emissions and decrease the effects ofglobal warming and the greenhouse effect.

Another method of agrofuel production is to grow plants that are rich in vegetable oil such as soybean and algae. When these oils are heated, they can be burned directly inside a diesel engine, or chemically produced to make biodiesel. Biodiesel is a non-petroleum-based type of fuel, which can be used as an additive in diesel car engines, in aircraft and train engines, and as a commercial or domestic heating oil.

Although using biofuels is a great way to go green be energy-efficient, there are a couple of disadvantages, such as the fact that utilizing crops to create this type of energy can result in a detriment to the global food supply. Furthermore, there is concern about the effects of clean energy on the oil industry.

Despite the drawbacks to utilizing this type of energy, further research and education should result in solutions that counteract the downsides. The important thing to remember is that we cannot continue doing the things we do that harm the environment.
